The following flies are listed in Francis Francis's book " A Book On Angling" from 1867.
 
 
For the USK.
 
No. 1: The Llanover (Lord Llanover)
 
 
Tag : Silver twist.
Tail : A topping.
Butt :
Body : Red-orange, dark blue, and claret seal's fur, equally divided.
Ribs : Silver tinsel (oval).
Hackle : Dark blue on dark blue seal's fur, and dark claret on the claret.
Throat : A dirty smudgy coch-y-bondu hackle.
Wings : Mixed; brown (mottled) turkey, bastard Bustard, pintail, blue, yellow and claret Swan (the first most plentyfull)
and a topping over all.
Cheeks :
Horns : Blue Macaw.
Head : Peacock herl.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
No. 2:
 
 
Tag : Silver twist.
Tail : A topping.
Body : One half orange and yellow pig's wool mixed, the other half lemon pig's wool.
Ribs : Silver tinsel.
Hackle : Light orange, long and full. dressed from head to tail.
Wings : A pair of Bittern hackles with stripes of Bustard and wood duck over them.
Horns : Blue Macaw.


No. 3: (Farlow)
 
 
Tag : Gold twist.
Tail : Sprigs of golden pheasant sword feather and yellow Macaw.
Body : Olive and yellow pig's wool mixed.
Ribs : Double gold twist.
Hackle : Silver grey dun.
Throat : Blue jay.
Wings : A bunch of bronze peacock herl,
 
No. 4: This fly was dressed by one of the Martins of Brecon.
 
Tail : Grey mallard, stained yellow and kingfisher feather.
Body : Yellowish buff wool, rather full.
Hackle : Bright yellow.
Wings : A pair of underwing feathers of the snipe or similar fron under a hawk's wing, stained medium yellow.
* This fly is varied with a lighter buff body and a grizzled blue dun hackle, or with a light green drewel tail, and
unstained ribbed feathers from under the woodcocks wing.
 
 
 
 
 
 
The following four flies are by Peake, of Abergavenny. A well-known local maker and first rate practical authority.

Tail : Two slips of red parrot and pale blue Macaw.
Body : Dirty yellow-orange crewel.
Ribs : Gold tinsel.
Hackle : Reddish-orange hackle (full).
Wings : A bunch of Peacock herl.
Head : Peacock.

 
No. 2:
 
 
Tag : Gold tinsel.
Tail : A topping and two long sprigs of red Macaw.
Body : Medium brown crewel.
Ribs : Narrow gold tinsel.
Hackle : Red orange with a black centre.
Wings : Brown speckled turkey.
Head : Peacock herl.

* This fly is varied with a tail as No.1; body, dirty brown orange; and hackle dark grizzly blue dun.
