The following flies are listed in Francis Francis's book " A Book On Angling" from 1867.
 
 
 
 
For the BUSH. " These flies were made for me by Wm. Doherty ans Son, fly tyers of Bushmills, who are the best
authorities upon all flies for the north of Ireland ".
 
* These flies have names, but I will mention them here, with the other flies for surten rivers, discribed by Fr. Fr.
 
No. 1: Called the Butcher fly. (though it is not the fly known as "the Butcher").

Tag : Silver thread and light orange floss.
Tail : Two or three fibres of tippet, blue macaw and mallard.
Butt : Black ostrich.
Body : Dark red claret Mohair.
Ribs : Narrow silver tinsel.
Throat : A lightish blue hackle.
Wings : Brown Mallard.
Horns : Blue Macaw
Head : Black.

 
No. 2: Called the Judge.
 
 
Tag : Silver thread and light orange floss.
Tail : One topping.
Butt : Peacock herl.
Body : Silver tinsel.
Hackle : A golden-olive or yellow-orange ( The colour is something between these two).
Throat : Red orange and Blue Jay over it.
Wings : Mixed of peacock, Bustard,with a few fibers of tippet, two toppings over.
Horns : Blue Macaw.
Head : Peacock herl.

No. 3: Called the McGildowny.
 
 
Tag : Silver thread and light orange floss.
Tail : Two or three fibers of tippet, blue Macaw and Mallard.
Butt : Peacock herl.
Body : Two turns of light orange floss, the rest yellow Mohair.
Ribs : Narrow silver tinsel.
Hackle : A dirty, medium brickdust red (only two-thirds down).
Throat : Blue jay.
Wings : Mixed; Bustard, Mallard, tippet (pretty plentyfull) and a little peacock.
Head : Peacock herl.
 
 
 
No. 4: Called the Erly
 
Tag : Silver thread and light orange floss.
Tail : Two or three fibres of tippet, blue macaw and mallard.
Butt : Yellow mohair.
Body : Red claret Mohair.
Ribs : Narrow silver tinsel.
Throat : A light blue hackle.
Wings : A tippet feather and Brown Mallard over.
Horns : Blue Macaw
Head : Black.
 
The following two flies are from Farlow.
 
No. 1: Called Powell's fancy
 
 
Tag : Gold tinsel and orange floss.
Tail : A topping.
Butt : Peacock herl.
Body : Two turns of orange floss, the rest orange pig's wool (lighter towards the tail, darker towards the shoulder).
Ribs : Gold tinsel, just above and beside it, a narrow thread of red, almost scarlet floss.
Hackle : Bright red orange.
Throat : Blue Jay.
Wings : Golden pheasant tail, bastard Bustard, Brown mallard, some tippet, grey mallard stained yellow
Wood duck.
Horns : Red Macaw.
Head : Black.
 


No. 2: Called The Grace
 
 
Tag : Gold tinsel and yellow floss.
Tail : A topping.
Butt : Black ostrich.
Body : Dark, rich ruby floss.
Ribs : Thick gold twist.
Hackle : Bright reddish claret.
Throat : Medium orange with blue jay over it.
Wings : Peacock, golden pheasant tail, Bustard, and wood duck. A topping over.
Horns : Blue Macaw.
Head : Black.
